“Understanding” Cancer Cluster second annual meeting at IARC
On 15 October 2024, IARC hosted the second annual meeting of the “Understanding” Cancer Cluster at its headquarters in Lyon. The event brought together representatives from five collaborative projects within the cluster for a day of fruitful discussions about understanding the impact of risk factors and health determinants on the development and progression of cancer. The event also welcomed representatives from the European Commission (EC), who provided valuable insights to ensure that the cluster is on track to meet their common goals. The 2025 meeting will be hosted by the MELCAYA Project in Barcelona, Spain, continuing the collaborative efforts to advance research and understanding of the causes of cancer.

IARC hosts European Union Cancer Mission meeting
Scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will host the annual meeting of the “Understanding Cancer” cluster of projects of the European Union Cancer Mission on 15 October in Lyon, France.
IARC is hosting the meeting in its capacity as the coordinator of the Discovering the Causes of Three Poorly Understood Cancers in Europe (DISCERN) project, which is one of the initiatives that make up the “Understanding Cancer” cluster of projects. These projects have common deliverables in areas such as citizen engagement in cancer research and communication with the general population.

“Understanding” Cancer Cluster first annual meeting
The first annual meeting of the “Understanding” Cancer Cluster was held on 7 September 2023 in San Sebastian, Spain. The meeting was organized by LUCIA, one of the five projects working on Objective 1 of the Cancer Mission programme, which aims to understand the impact of risk factors and health determinants on the development and progression of cancer.

It’s never too late to quit smoking, even after a cancer diagnosis!
In a new video, IARC scientist Dr Mahdi Sheikh presents good news revealed by a recent study on the benefits of quitting smoking for patients diagnosed with kidney cancer: quitting smoking after diagnosis reduced the risk of death and cancer progression by half.

Face-to-face kick-off meeting in Barcelona

DISCERN holds its kick-off meeting in Barcelona on 15 and 16 May 2023, bringing together more than 50 participants from 12 European countries around DISCERN objectives, project implementation, presentation of the Work Packages, and other scientific discussions.
“Understanding” Cancer Cluster kick-off meeting
The “Understanding” Cancer Cluster kick-off meeting was held virtually on 6 March 2023, bringing together representatives of the five projects funded by the Horizon Europe programme. The first annual meeting will be held on 7 September 2023 in San Sebastian.
Online kick-off meeting
The DISCERN kick-off meeting was held virtually on 12 January 2023, after the project was launched on 1 January 2023.
